How to Type in Kashmiri Across All Your Devices
Whether you are working on a desktop PC or chatting on your smartphone, typing in Kashmiri is easy once you have the right tools installed. Here is your complete, working guide.
Microsoft Windows PC
To type all specific Kashmiri vowel sounds efficiently on Windows, you can use a custom phonetic keyboard layout.
Installation Steps:
- Download the Keyboard: Download the setup files from SourceForge: Kashmiri Keyboard (Perso-Arabic).
- Run Setup: Extract the downloaded .zip file and run the setup executable.
- Adjust Windows Settings:
- Open your system’s Settings and go to Time & Language > Language & Region (or “Regional Languages” in the Control Panel on older versions).
- If you currently use the Arabic (Syria) keyboard, remove it.
- Search for Kashmiri (Arabic) and add it as a language.
- Select the newly installed Kashmiri Keyboard layout.
- Note: You can safely remove the Urdu keyboard if you no longer need it to keep your keyboard menu uncluttered.
Important Features & Recommendations: - Recommended Font: Windows default fonts don’t always render Kashmiri perfectly. For the best reading and typing experience, download the Scheherazade New font from SIL International.
- Typing Features: This layout is phonetically designed for speed. Similar consonant sounds can be accessed using Shift + Key, and similar short/long vowel sounds are mapped together conveniently.
Smartphones (Android & iOS)
For mobile devices, the most reliable and feature-rich option is Gboard (Google Keyboard). It natively supports Kashmiri in both Perso-Arabic and Devanagari scripts, complete with autocorrect and predictive text.
Using Gboard (Android & iPhone):
- Install Gboard: Download Gboard from the Google Play Store (Android) or the App Store (iOS). Make sure it is set as your default keyboard.
- Open Keyboard Settings: Open the Gboard app or tap the settings gear icon ⚙️ on the keyboard itself.
- Add the Language: Tap Languages, then select Add keyboard at the bottom.
- Search: Search for Kashmiri in the list.
- Choose Script: Select your preferred script—either Kashmiri (Arabic) or Kashmiri (Devanagari). Tap Done.
- Switch and Type: When typing a message, simply long-press the spacebar (or tap the globe icon) to switch to the Kashmiri keyboard.
Native iPhone Alternative: If you use an iPhone and prefer not to download third-party apps, iOS has built-in Kashmiri support. Go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards > Add New Keyboard… and search for Kashmiri.
